West Region DII non-conference play has concluded for men’s and women’s basketball as of last night, and the cumulative results have been positive for the GNAC. Depending on the quality of results, these matchups can play an outsized role in the determination of who lands at-large berths to the NCAA West Regionals.

On the women’s side, the GNAC has posted a winning record against its West Region counterparts in the CCAA and the PacWest, winning 32 of 55 (.582) matchups. The GNAC went 18–11 (.621) against the CCAA and 14–12 (.538) vs. the PacWest.

Western Washington (7–2) and Simon Fraser (7–2) combined for 14 of the GNAC’s 32 wins although all 10 GNAC members posted at least one win in matchups against their West Region non-league counterparts.

On the men’s side, the GNAC posted a combined record of 29–23 (.558) against CCAA and PacWest opposition. The GNAC went 17–11 vs. the Pac-West and 12–12 vs. the CCAA.

Leading the way for the GNAC has been Saint Martin’s, which has gone unbeaten across seven matchups — 5–0 vs. the PacWest and 2–0 vs. the CCAA. Central Washington has posted a 4–2 record, going 3–1 vs. the CCAA and 1–1 vs. the PacWest.

(Note: while matchups vs. CCAA and PacWest teams make up a majority of a team’s in-region matchups, games against DII opponents located in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska also count as in-region contests).

Beginning today, Division II goes on its usual nine-day shutdown until Friday, Dec. 29. A handful of non-conference games will take place next weekend coming out of the shutdown before GNAC play resumes Thursday, Jan. 4.

For an updated look at some of the key criteria used in selecting the five at-large teams that will join the automatic qualifiers in the NCAA men’s and women’s regionals, I am offering two links you should find helpful.
